Mission & Outreach:
Good Shepherd Vancouver puts mission and outreach at the forefront of our mandate in obedience to Christ’s Great Commission both locally and globally.
Locally:
The Taste of Life Fellowship is an outreach ministry to chefs and workers in Chinese restaurants in the Lower Mainland. This specific people group, due to their long hours and high stress work environment, have little opportunity to participate in conventional church life, let alone enjoying a harmonious family life, education opportunity or leisure. Since 2009, a core ministry group has been dedicating themselves to befriend these workers and their families, bringing Jesus’ gospel of abundant life to them. People gather for fellowship, bible study and worship on Tuesday night, from 10:30 p.m. to past midnight. Personal evangelism, pastoral care and discipleship are carried out during rest breaks on their work days. This indeed is an incarnational mission. After 11 years of time and manpower intensive labour, we rejoice in presenting a bountiful harvest to God, having raised up the first generation of Christian lay leaders from among them. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, many restaurant workers and owners are struggling with financial and mental challenges. New seekers have joined the Taste of Life Fellowship to hear the gospel of hope.
Globally:
The Karen Anglican Ministry at the Border (KAMB) operates several boarding houses to provide shelter, food, care and adult supervision for externally displaced Karen children on the Thai-Myanmar border. The Karen people is one among the oppressed ethnic tribes in Myanmar. These children, some orphaned, have crossed the border for a better chance of a decent education outside their homeland, which is still very much in turmoil up to now. Good Shepherd Vancouver has been supporting this ministry since 2011, fully funding the needs of the boarding houses as an Anglican Relief and Development Fund Canada project. We have been able to raise compassion and support from the community at large through our biennial fundraising concert From Thy Bounty.
In 2011 and 2015, Good Shepherd Vancouver sent short term mission teams to share Jesus’ love and his gospel with the children and youth living in the boarding houses. We had the opportunity to work closely with the KAMB leaders and the Anglican Church in Thailand, as well as learning more about missions work from the Diocese of Singapore.
